Who was Martha Alford married to first?

Welcome to The Crescent, Taunton, One Place Study blog.

Having established the children from her 2nd marriage to George Groves in my previous blog post, I have turned to searching for the 1st marriage of Martha Alford to a spouse who had the surname Mead.

First, I did a search on the FreeBMD website for a marriage index in the name of Martha Alford and with the spouse surname of Mead with no other filters on date or place. This returned just one entry for a marriage in the September quarter of 1861 in Shepton Mallet between John Mead and Martha Alford [1]I continued with my research on the Ancestry website as many records for the county of Somerset are held on this site. Here, I discovered a marriage document for a union between John Mead and Martha Alford at St Peter and St Paul's Church in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, on 10 September 1861 [2]

It is interesting to note that the witnesses have the same surnames as Martha, with one, Thomas, also mentioned on her second marriage to George Groves. Are these witnesses her relatives? This is research for another day.

I also found a notice in the Wells Journal on Saturday 14 September 1861 on the British Newspaper Archive website regarding their marriage [3].

Newspaper notices sometimes contain lots of helpful details which you might not find on other official documents that can help to corroborate different pieces of information. With the notice regarding John and Martha's marriage, it is interesting to note the names of the hotels, with "John Mead, of the Swan Hotel, Wells", and Martha's mother "Mrs Mary Ann Alford of the George Hotel, at Shepton Mallet". In the Shepton Mallet Journal marriage notice on her union to George Groves in 1869, it is detailed that Martha is "of Shepton Mallet, late of the Swan Hotel, Wells" which is more corroborating information [4].

I next moved onto finding out about any children resulting from the marriage of John Mead and Martha Alford. I have established that the son-in-law, Francis Henry Mead, mentioned on the 1871 England [5], when Martha was living with her husband George Groves at 2 The Crescent, was actually her son from her first marriage. To corroborate this, I searched the Ancestry website for a baptism entry for him, which I found in the records of St Cuthbert's Church, Wells [6].

Finding the abode of Sadler Street on Francis' baptism, I wanted to establish if there was a Swan Hotel at this location. Searching the Old Maps Online website, we see there are a number of unnamed hotels on the 1888 Map. The Swan Hotel is mentioned by name on the 1930 Map. The Swan Hotel is still open today on Sadler Street, Wells, operating under the Best Western brand. You can find an 8 page PDF on Best Western website if you are interested in discovering more about the history of the Swan Hotel.

For completeness in my research, I did a search of the birth index on the General Register Office (GRO) website for children with the surname Mead and the mother's maiden name of Alford born between 1861 and 1869 as these are the years between which Martha was married to John Mead. No further children were identified so it seems that they only had the one son, Francis Henry Mead.

I next wanted to find out when John Mead passed away. First, I did a search of the death index on the General Register Office (GRO) website between 1861, the year he married Martha, and 1871, the first Census taken after Martha married George Groves. Only one entry was returned in this period in Wells, Somerset, in the March quarter of 1868 [7]. I followed this up with a search on the Ancestry website for a burial entry for him, which I found under the records for St Cuthbert Church, Wells [8].

Finally, to complete this stage of my research, I did a search on the Probate Service website to see if there was an entry for John Mead, which there was [9]

It notes that John, an Innholder, died on 18 January 1868 in Wells and his widow Martha was granted the personal estate and effects of her husband.

John Mead's death is also mentioned on page 5 of a PDF on the history of the Swan Hotel, Wells, on the Best Western website [10]. He is also referred to in other articles in this document, such as 'Letters to the Wells Journal' [11] and 'Good Reviews' [12].

In my next update, I will focus on Martha Alford and tracing her life and family back through the England Census records to find out about her early yearsIn the meantime, I hope that you have enjoyed learning about Martha Alford, her husband John Mead and their son Francis as much as I have researching them. The children of George and Martha Groves

On my previous post, I was looking at the family living at 1 The Crescent, Taunton at the time of the 1881 England Census. Martha Groves, who was listed as the head of the household, was aged 50 years and a widow at this time [1]. I had discovered that her son's full name was George Alford Groves from a search of the General Register Office (GRO) index [2]. I therefore started my research by looking for George's Baptism record.

I searched on Ancestry as many records for the county of Somerset are on this site. There I found the baptism entry for George Alford Groves [3] ,which matched the details from the 1871 [4] and 1881 [5] England Census records for him.

Although there were no other children listed for George and Martha on the 1871 or 1881 England Census, I decided to do a search on the General Register Office (GRO) website. I checked the index for children with the surname Groves and the mother's maiden name of Alford born between 1869 and 1881, when we know that Martha was widowed, although most likely too old to have children at the later end of this date range.

There was only one entry listed which matched my search criteria and that was for a male birth of William Arthur Groves, in the March Quarter of 1872, in Taunton, Somerset [6]. I then searched for a baptism record for William Arthur on Ancestry and found an entry which matched with his parents, George and Martha Groves, and their abode on The Crescent [7].

As William is not listed on the 1881 England Census, I searched the deaths index on the General Register Office (GRO) website . I found an entry for William Arthur Groves, in the December Quarter of 1872, in Taunton, Somerset [8]I then turned to Ancestry again where I located an entry for William Arthur Groves on the burial register for St Mary Magdalene Church in Taunton, Somerset [9].

So, it seems that George and Martha Groves did have two sons, with one sadly passing away before his first birthday.

On my next update, I will try to establish who Martha Alford was married to before George Groves. In the meantime, I hope that you have enjoyed reading about the Groves family as much as I have investigating them for my One Place Study. Who lives at 1 The Crescent on the 1881 England Census?

So, I have now moved backwards in time to the night of 3rd April 1881, when the England Census was taken. At the time, 1 The Crescent was home to Martha Groves [1].

The census tells us, Martha, aged 50 years, was a Widow at the time this was taken. She was an annuitant, which means she received an annuity, or regular payment from a grant or investment, and is similar to today's pension. She is living with her son, George A Groves, and niece, Jessie E Groves, along with a general servant, Elizabeth Westcott.

Looking back ten years on the Census for The Crescent, we see that this is not the first entry for Martha and her son. On the 1871 England Census, taken on the night of 2 April, they are resident at number 2, with George Groves, Martha's husband, as the head of the household [2]

I decided to start this research by doing a search for the son, George A Groves, on the General Register Office (GRO) website. There I found an entry for George Alford Groves in the September Quarter of 1870, in Taunton, Somerset [3]. From this, we see that the mother's maiden name is given as Alford. A search of the FreeBMD website for a marriage index in the names George Groves and Martha Alford does not return any matches. However, when a search is done with the name George Groves and using just Martha's first name, and narrowing the search to the county of Somerset, we find a marriage for George Groves and Martha Mead in 1869 in Shepton Mallet [4]. Was Martha married previously?

Continuing my research, I discovered the marriage document for George Groves and Martha Mead at St Peter and St Paul's Church in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, on 24 August 1869 [5]

We can see from this document that Mary's maiden name was indeed Alford, her father's name was Thomas Alford, and that she was indeed married previously to someone with the surname of Mead and that she was sadly widowed. Are the witnesses her relatives? Who was she previously married to? This is for research another day.

There was also a notice in the Shepton Mallet Journal on Saturday 21 August 1869 regarding their marriage [6].

Next, I wanted to establish that Frances was Martha's son, and George's step son rather than son-in-law. 8 years old is a little young to be a son-in-law already. A search for Frances H Mead on the General Register Office (GRO) website does not return any results. However, on amending the spelling of his name to Francis, I found an entry for Francis Henry Mead in the June Quarter of 1862, in Wells, Somerset [7], which matches his birthplace on the 1871 England Census. The mother's maiden name is given as Alford. Also, from the marriage notice in the Shepton Mallet Journal, Martha is noted as being 'late of the Swan Hotel, Wells'[8]

On the next update, I will further research George and Martha Groves and their children, looking into more parish records for information on this family. In the meantime, I hope that you have enjoyed learning about the Groves family as much as I have researching them.
