What happened to Martha Groves & her sons?

This update will look at what happened to Martha Groves nee Alford, and her sons, Francis Henry Mead and George Alford Groves, who were living at 1 The Crescent at the time of the 1881 England Census (See post). Martha's husband, George Groves, has passed away by the time of this time and we will look at what happened to him when we move on 2 The Crescent, later in this One Place Study.

For now, we return to Martha. A search of the British Newspaper Archive finds an advert placed in the Taunton Courier and Western Advertiser on the 30 September 1885 for stabling to be let by private treaty at 1 The Crescent [1].

On 3 March 1888, in the Somerset County Gazette, there is a wanted advertisment for a general servant for 1 The Crescent [2].

By the time of the 1891 England Census, Martha is living at Springfield House on Staplegrove Road in Taunton, Somerset with Alice Neal, a general servant [3]

On the 1901 England Census, Martha is living with her cousin, Lucy Galpin, at 21 Dorchester Road, in Melcombe Regis, Dorset, England, along with Alice Shepherd, a general domestic servant [4].

No entry was found for Martha on the 1911 Census so I started to search for when she passed away. An entry in 1907 on the Probate Search website establishes that Martha died on 8 December 1906 [5]. Her address is given as 10 Clarence Terrace, Claverton Down, Bath. This was the address that her brother, Thomas Alford, and sister, Clara Alford, were living at on the 1911 England Census (see post). It is also interesting to note that she did not leave her effects to either of her sons. Had they passed away before her? There is also an entry on the death index on the General Register Office website [6]

I first searched the Bath Burial Index as she had died in the city, however, there was no record for her. I next searched the Somerset burial records on Ancestry and found that she had been laid to rest in Wells [7], where her first husband died (see post).

Next, I searched for Francis Henry Mead, Martha's son for her first marriage to John Mead (see post). He was living with his mother and step-father, George Groves, on the 1871 England Census at 2 The Crescent (see post). However, he was no longer living with his mother at 1 The Crescent at the time the 1881 England Census was taken. Setting the search criteria on Ancestry to his name, born in Wells, Somerset, +/- 2 years around 1862, I found him lodging at the home of James & Sarah Pratt, in Paddington, London [8]. He is a medical student.

Francis also has an entry in the 1890 Medical Directory stating that he has a M.B. (Bachelor of Medicine) and is a M.R.C.S (Member of the Royal College of Surgeons) and is living at Warre House, Bishop's Lydeard, Somerset [9]. We find Francis is living at Warre House in Bishop's Lydeard, Somerset, on the 1891 England Census [10]

He is also married to a Florence E. A search of the marriage index on FreeBMD's website finds an entry between Francis Henry Mead and Florence Emmeline Howard in Lambeth in the September quarter of 1884 [11]. A search on Ancestry finds an entry for this union on 30 July 1884, at St Mary, Lambeth [12]:

A search of the 1901 England Census found no entry that was likely to be Francis and Florence Mead. So I looked for Francis again in a later issue of the UK & Ireland Medical Directory on Ancestry and found an entry for him in the 1895 edition [13] which states:

    MEAD, Francis Hy., La Mesa, San Diego, California, U.S.A. -- M.D. Durh. 1891, M.B. 1885; M.R.C.S. Eng. 1885

So, I now know why I could not find him on the England Census...he has moved to America!

I located a Naturalization record for Francis Henry Mead on 15 March 1900 in the Superior Court of San Diego, California [14]. He is also listed on the 1900 United States Federal Census, working as a Physician, married (although Florence is not listed with him), and living in San Diego, California [15]. He has entries on the 1910 [16], 1920 [17] & 1930 [18] United States Census', where he is continuing to live in San Diego, California, along with his wife, Florence, and working as a Physician. There is no record that they ever had any children.

Francis passed away on 15 November 1931 in San Diego, California, United States of America [19]. Florence passed away on 19 November 1949 also in San Diego [20]. They were laid to rest at Greenwood Memorial Park in San Diego [21] [22].

Now onto Martha's other son, George Alford Groves, her first son from her second marriage to George Groves. We last saw him living with his widowed mother on the 1881 England Census at 2 The Crescent, Taunton, Somerset [23].

A search of the 1891 & 1901 England & Wales Census found no definitive entry for George. However, a search on the Probate Service website found an entry in 1902 for George Alford Groves [24], who was of 21 Dorchester Road, Weymouth, which is where Martha was living at the time of the 1901 England Census. He died on 10 August 1901 at Naawpoort Cape Colony, South Africa. He was a trooper in the French's Scouts. The following announcement was in the Southern Times and Dorset County Herald on Saturday 17 August 1901 [25]:

I could find no record that George Alford Groves was ever married.

This brings to a close, for now, in my research for Martha Groves nee Alford, who lived at 1 The Crescent, Taunton, Somerset, England, at the time of the 1881 England Census. She will be popping up again on this blog when I research her husband, who she was living with at 2 The Crescent at the time of the 1871 England Census.

I hope that you have enjoyed learning about the Martha Groves nee Alford and her extended family as much as I have researching them. It would be wonderful to hear from you via the comments section on this blog or via my facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/lucythecrescentops/ - If you would like to see the extended family tree that I have been building for my One Place Study of 1 The Crescent, it is on Ancestry under 1 The Crescent Taunton One Place Study.

Next time I will move onto the family who were living at 1 The Crescent, at the time of the 1871 England Census.

The Alfords from 1881 onwards...

This post will look at what happened to Martha Groves (nee Alford) remaining siblings, Thomas, John, Mary Ann & Clara, and their mother, Mary Ann Alford (nee Galpin).

I started with Martha's mother, Mary Ann Alford. On the 1881 England Census, we found that she was living at 4 St Johns Terrace in Radipole, Dorset, England with her son, John, and 2 of her daughters, Mary Ann and Clara, along with a servant, Elizabeth Clark (see post).

Using her name, born in 1803, +/- 5 years, and born in Broadwindsor, Dorset as the search criteria for the 1891 England Census, I was unable to find a matching record for Mary Ann Alford. I expanded the search criteria but still no match was returned, so it is likely that she died between 1881 and 1891. I then searched for an entry on the death index on the General Register Office website. There was no match with a year of birth of about 1803. There were two possible matches with age at death within 5 years of a year of birth of about 1803:

A
burial entry was found for the death of Mary Ann Alford in Taunton, Somerset as follows [3]

It is possible that this is Martha's mother Mary Ann, however her age at death is given as 83, meaning that she was born in about 1801. On all the Census records, with the exception of 1841, her year of birth has been about 1803. I was unable to locate a burial entry for the death of Mary Ann Alford in Ledbury. I was also unable to find a probate entry for either Mary Ann. I guess that this will just have to be one of those little mysteries for now as I do not have a copy of either of the death certificates that might prove or disprove my findings. I am going to go with the information that the Mary Ann Alford who died in Taunton is the one associated with this family and update my tree accordingly.

Next, the eldest son of Mary Ann Alford, and brother to Martha Groves, Thomas. On the 1881 England Census, Thomas was living on the High Street in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, along with his wife Mary Ann, and working as a Chemist and Druggist (see post). We find him on the 1891 England Census, still living on the High Street in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire and continuing to work as a Chemist and Druggist [4]

However, he is now a widow. His sisters, Clara and Mary Ann, are living with him along with a general servant, Jane Collin. So, his wife Mary Ann passed away between 1881 & 1891.

I started the search for when Mary Ann passed away with the burial records for Stonehouse in Gloucestershire as this is where Thomas was still living. I found the following record [5]:

I also found a entry on the death index on the General Register Office website [6]. I was able to get a exact date of death of 2 August 1887, from an entry on the Probate Service website [7]. Her estate and effects were granted to her husband.

On the 1901 England, Thomas, along with his sisters, Mary Ann and Clara, are still living on the High Street in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. He has now retired as a Chemist [8].

On the 1911 England Cenus, Thomas has moved. He is now living at 10 Clarence Terrace, Claverton Down, Bath, Somerset, with his sister Clara, and a servant, Edith Everall [9]

So what has happened to his sister Mary Ann? A search of the burial records for Somerset on Ancestry finds that she passed away in about March 1909 [10].

A search of death index on the General Register Office website found a entry for Mary Ann [11]. An entry on the Probate Service website gives her date of death as 3 March and that her effects are left to her sister, Clara [12]

I also did search of the burial records for Somerset on Ancestry for Clara and Thomas, however, there were no matching entries. As they were living in Bath, Somerset, I did a search of the Bath Burial Index to see if there were entries for them before searching for them following the 1911 England Census. I found that they were buried at the Lyncombe and Widcombe & St James' Cemetery. Clara died on 5 February 1915 [13] and was buried on 12 February 1915 [14]. Her brother, Thomas, died just under a year later, on 12 January 1916, and was buried on 15 January 1916 [15]. His death index entry on the General Register Office website indicates that he died in Taunton [16]. On the Probate Service website, there is no record for Clara. There is an entry for Thomas, of 3 Mansfield Road, Taunton [17]. His effects are left to Edward Colston Fear, Gentleman.

Only one brother of Martha's remains to be researched and that is John Alford. John was living with his mother and 2 sisters, Mary Ann and Clara at the time of the 1881 England Census (See post). I decided to first do a search on the Probate Service website where I found a record for John Alford, a gentleman of 3 Mansfield Road, Taunton, who died 25 April 1904 [18]. His effects are left to Thomas Alford, Gentleman. As he is not listed living with any of his siblings after the 1881 England Census, I undertook a search on Ancestry for him. Using his name, born in Sherborne, Dorset in +/- 2 years of 1834, I found John Alford on the 1891 England Census [19]

On the 1891 England Census, John is listed as married to Sarah A, daughter of Elizabeth Oldman, and that he is blind. Another search on Ancestry found a Marriage Licence between 'John Alford of the Parish of Saint James in Taunton' & 'Sarah Ann Oldman of the Parish of Shepton Mallet' on 17 October 1885 [20]. John and Sarah Ann married on 27 October 1885 in Shepton Mallet, Somerset [21] [22].

It is interesting to note that the address given on the burial record of Mary Ann Alford from 1884 also has the abode of Sydney Terrace. This is corroborating information that the death of Mary Ann Alford of Taunton is correct for this family tree.

On the 1901 England Census, John is listed as a boarder in the home of John & Louisa Radford [23].

His wife Sarah is listed as a visitor at the home of James and Julie Steeds in Shepton Mallet on the 1901 England Census [24]. John was found in the probate records earlier in this research and an entry for his death is in the index on the General Register Office website [25]. John was buried at St Marys Cemetery in Taunton, Somerset [26]

I have been unable to establish when Sarah Ann Alford nee Oldman died from searches of death, burial or probate records that I have done. However, as John's effects were left to his brother in 1904, it is possible that she passed away between 1901 and 1904.

John was the last sibling of Martha Groves nee Alford to be researched. Here is a family tree, detailed without the marriages of Martha and John:

On my next update, I will be researching the later years of Martha Groves and what happened to her and her sons, Francis Henry Mead and George Alford Groves.
In the meantime, I hope that you have enjoyed reading this blog much as I have enjoyed researching this family for my One Place Study.

The Alford's in the Census records up to 1881...

This post will consider the lives of Martha Alford's mother, Mary Ann Alford nee Galpin, and her other children, from the time after the 1861 England Census. We will go up to the time of the 1881 England Census when we know that Martha Groves was living at 1 The Crescent, Taunton, Somerset.

We already know that Martha Alford, the eldest daughter of the late Thomas Alford and Mary Ann Galpin, married John Mead on 10 September 1861 [1] (See the 'Who was Martha Alford married to first? post).

I started this research by looking for the matriarch of the family, Mary Ann Alford, on the 1871 England Census by searching the Ancestry website with her name and born in Broadwindsor, Dorset, which returned the result below [2]

We can see from this that she is living with her son, John, and 2 daughters, Mary Ann and Clara at the George Hotel in Shepton Mallett, Somerset along with a boarder and 4 servants.

I used the same search parameters as above for Mary Ann Alford for the 1881 England Census and returned the result below
[3]

We can see that she is still living with her son, John, and her 2 daughters, Mary Ann and Clara, along with a servant, Elizabeth Clark. However, they are now living at 4 St Johns Terrace in Radipole, Dorset, England.

Turning to Martha's siblings, I looked for her brothers and sisters who were missing on the various early census records and where I had not already found a death or burial entry (see 'Tracing the parents and siblings of Martha Alford' post). I started the search with Thomas Alford, Martha's brother who was born in about 1832, and is not listed with the rest of the family on the 1851 England Census. An entry for him was located living on Market Place in Crewkerne, Somerset
[4]  where he is a Chemist's Apprentice:

I was unable to find a conclusive record for Thomas Alford on the 1861 England Census. I did though find an entry for him on the 1871 England Census living on the High Street in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, where he worked as a Chemist and Druggist [5]:

On the 1881 England Census, Thomas is still living on the High Street in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, along with his wife Mary Ann, and continues to work as a Chemist and Druggist [6]:

I have not been able to find a conclusive marriage index or entry in the various records available for Thomas Alford marrying with the information currently researched.

Next, I searched for Mary Ann Alford, who was missing from the 1861 England Census. I located her living with her Mother's brother and his wife, Walter and Marianne Galpin, in Crewkerne, Somerset, as detailed below
[7]

This just leaves one sibling, Ellen Alford, who was missing from the census taken in 1871. A search on the Ancestry website for her using her name and born in +/- 1 year around 1843 in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, returns one result as below [8]

Ellen is living with her Father's brothers, James & John Alford, in Sherrington, Wiltshire, England and is working as a Governess. There was no record of Ellen on the 1881 Census. However, a search for a burial record between 1871 and 1881 in Somerset, England, on the Ancestry website sadly returned one result as below [9]:

A search of the death indexes on the GRO website located a matching record [10]. There is also an entry on the Probate Service website for Ellen Alford which tells us that she died on 2 May 1879 and her personal estate was granted to Mary Ann Alford of Shepton Mallet, widow, the mother and only next of kin [11]

So, the Alford family tree is updated:

On my next update, I will move forward to the time after the 1881 Census and consider what happened to Martha Groves mother, Mary Ann Alford, her brothers, Thomas and John, and her sisters, Mary Ann and Clara. In the meantime, I hope that you have enjoyed reading this blog much as I have enjoyed researching this family for my One Place Study.

It would be wonderful to hear from you via the comments section on this blog or via my Facebook pageIf you would like to see the tree that I have been building for my One Place Study for each individual house, it is on Ancestry under 1 The Crescent Taunton One Place Study.
