Back in time with the Turle's...

This update will look back to see where the Turle family came from before living at 1 The Crescent, Taunton, Somerset.

In my last post, we found Henry Turle, a retired merchant, living there at the time of the 1871 England Census, with his family, his wife's widowed sister's family and two servants. Going back 10 years on Ancestry, we find that Henry Turle is living with his family at Risdon House, which is listed right before the entry of 1 The Crescenton the 1861 England Census [1]:

I have been unable to find Risdon House detailed on a map or in a city, county or trade directory. However, the description of the Enumeration District is as follows:

Part of the Parish of Taunton St Mary Magdalene,
From and including the House occupied by Miss Hull on the North West end of High Street, along the West side of High Street to the Corner of Upper High Street, with the Colleges adjoining, along the North side of Upper High Street to the road leading to The Crescent, Upper Crescent, Crescent Pitt, Victoria Place, Olivers Place the Crescent including Risdon House.

We can see that they have more children than the 2 sons and 1 daughter from the 1871 England Census so I returned to the General Register Office (GRO) website to locate the other 3 sons, Robert Hobbs Turle, Henry Turle and Arthur Turle:

I was unable to locate a entry on the birth index on the GRO website for Henry Turle so I began searching for his and his brother's baptism records, using the Ancestry website, and found the following:

So, we have located Henry's baptism at Holy Trinity in Taunton. I wonder why he was baptised at this church rather than St Mary's Church like his brothers?

Going back another 10 years on Ancestry, we find that Henry Turle is living with his family, 2 employees and 3 servants, on North Street, Taunton, when the 1851 England Census was taken [7]:

Henry is listed in the 1859 Bristol Post Office Directory & Gazetteer in Taunton on page 857 with the following entry [8]:

Grocers and Tea Dealers (continued) ---
Turle, Henry, 46, North Street

The 1851 England Census was the first one after Henry Turle married Jane Hobbs, in Cannington, Somerset in 1844. So for the completeness of my research, I searched General Register Office (GRO) website to see if there were any other children that could be their offspring. I found the following entries that might be their children:

To check if they are the children of Henry and Jane, I checked the baptism records for Somerset on Ancestry and discovered the following two entries for them:

As Henry and Walter do not appear with the rest of the family, I wanted to establish when they died. I started with a search of the Somerset burial records on Ancestry and found the following entries:

I then cross-referenced the burial records with those on the GRO website and the FreeBMD website:

I was unable to find Henry's death indexed on the GRO website. I found a record on the FreeBMD website, which was in the right time period, although this record does not give an age at death like the GRO does. The death was registered in Bridgwater, Somerset. Without requesting the death certificate, I cannot be certain that this is the correct index record for Henry. The burial record abode of East Reach is the same as what is listed on the baptisms of Robert Hobbs Turle and Henry Turle, their son born in late 1848, so I am fairly certain that Henry died about December 1847. I have reported a missing entry on the death index with the GRO for Henry Turle who died in Bridgwater. I will wait to see what an investigation finds as age at death to see if this could be the right entry.

So here is a family tree for Henry Turle and Jane Hobbs and their 7 sons and 1 daughter from all the information that we have collated to date:

On my next update, I will be researching the early years of Henry Turle and Jane Hobbs before they married in Cannington in 1844. In the meantime, I hope that you have enjoyed reading this blog much as I have enjoyed researching this family for my One Place Study.

It would be wonderful to hear from you via the comments section on this blog or via my Facebook pageIf you would like to see the tree that I have been building for my One Place Study for each individual house, it is on Ancestry under 1 The Crescent Taunton One Place Study. Who was living at 1 The Crescent on the 1871 Census?

This post will look at the family who was living at 1 The Crescent, Taunton, Somerset, at the time of the 1871 England Census.

At this time, Henry Turle, a retired merchant, was living there with his wife, Jane, 2 sons, Walter and Edward, and daughter Clara J [1]. Also living at the residence was Anne Thorpe, sister of Jane and a farmer's widow, her 2 sons, James C and Robert H, and 2 daughters, Elizabeth M and Rosa Cole. The household had 2 servants, Amelia Panting, a cook, and Ellen Lawrence, a housemaid.

I will focus on the Turle family in this update. My first task is to identify the Turle children, using the information from the census on their place of birth and their age to get an approximate year of birth. I conducted a search of the General Register Office website and returned the following results:

So we have established that Henry Turle wife's name was Jane Hobbs. I next did I search of the Ancestry website and found a marriage entry [5] [6] on 27 August 1844 between Henry Turle of Taunton and Jane Hobbs of Cannington, which would fit with all the information that we have collated as far.

I then began researching, using the Ancestry website, for the baptisms of the children of Henry and Jane Turle named on the 1871 England Census. The table below shows the details of the children's baptisms at St Mary Magdalene Church:

So, here is the Turle Family Tree from the information that we discovered from this week's research:

I am looking forward to researching the Turle family as part of my One Place Study of The Crescent, Taunton. On the next update, I will look further backwards into the history of this family. In the meantime, I hope that you have enjoyed reading this blog much as I have enjoyed researching this family for my One Place Study.
