The Turle Children - Part 2

Welcome to this update on The Crescent, Taunton, Somerset, One Place Study. This post will continue to look at the lives of the children of Henry and Jane Turle (nee Hobbs) which might continue into a part 3! Let's see how I get on...

So, this is where I got up to the the Turle family tree after researching more about Henry Turle and Robert Hobbs Turle in my last post:

If you would like to see the tree that I have been building for my One Place Study for each individual family, it is on Ancestry.
Search for 1 The Crescent Taunton One Place Study.

So, the next child I am researching is a another son called Henry. There is a bit of a puzzle around Henry. When I searched for him on Ancestry with a date of birth +/- 2 years around 1849 and born in Taunton, Somerset, England, an entry on the Albany Rural Cemetery Burial Cards [1] is returned as a possible match. However, the card states that that he was 13 years, 11 months and 15 days at his date of death on August 2 1862 and that he was interred in the Mascord and Hobbs lot (Lot 62, Section 62). I decided to search the surnames Mascord and Hobbs to see who else was buried in the same lot and section.

I also discovered an alternative free website where you can search through the Albany Rural Cemetery records, listed by surname, although the Albany Rural Cemetery Burial Cards have not yet all been completely transcribed so the images on Ancestry are more complete.

From this information, it seems that Henry had gone to the United States to most likely live with John Hobbs, who was probably the brother of his mother Jane Turle nee Hobbs based on his year of birth. I wanted to find records that could corroborate this. First, I found an entry on the Find A Grave website for John Hobbs [16], that matched the date of death given on the Albany Rural Cemetery burial cards. There was an image of the gravemaker which states:

John Hobbs
Born
Cannington,
Somerset, Eng
May 9, 1825
Died
New York
April 7, 1874

With this information, I looked on Ancestry to find a baptism entry for John and found a matching record [17]

This matches with the details of Jane Hobbs and her two sisters, Elizabeth and Anne, and brother, Benjamin, who we discovered in an earlier post. I also found one more child of Benjamin and Elizabeth Hobbs, a son, Thomas, who was baptised on 14 September 1818, in Cannington [18]

So it does seem that Henry did travel across the Atlantic to America, apparently when he was very young. Sadly, there was no gravemarker for Henry found in section 62, lot 62 of the Albany Rural Cemetery when I made a request for a photo via the Find A Grave website [19]. I did find one other record on the Probate Service website, although this was dated from 1868, which states the following [20]:

Administrations, 1868

Henry Turle. Effects under £20.

21 September.    Letters of Administration of the Personal Estate and effects of Henry Turle late of the City of New York in the United States of America Gentleman a Bachelor deceased who died 2 August 1868 at Stamford Connecticut in the United States aforesaid were granted at the Principal Registry to Henry Turle of Taunton in the County of Somerset Gentleman the Father and Next of Kin of the said Deceased he having been first sworn.

So, are the Albany Rural Cemetery burial cards incorrect? I requested a copy of the letters of administration from the Probate Service as they are cost only £1.50 to request at the time of writing and may help me discover the truth about Henry Turle. Sadly, the papers did not give any further information, such as an address of the deceased or his next of kin as he died intestate, meaning he had not written a will. I did look on Familysearch [21], more specifically the death records relating to Stamford, Connecticut, however, I could not find a entry for the death of Henry Turle in 1862 or 1868. On the balance of probability and with the available documents, I believe that Henry Turle died in the United States of America on 2 August 1868 and will update the Turle family tree accordingly.

So, onto the next son, Arthur Turle. From my earlier research (see post), we know that Arthur was living with the family at Risdon House at the time of the 1861 England Census but was no longer with them on the 1871 England Census at 1 The Crescent. Instead we find that Arthur has moved to 42 New Street, Lambeth, London, England [22], where he is a boarder and a medical student. By the time of the 1881 England Census, Arthur has moved to the High Street, Enderby in Leicestershire, England [22]. He is unmarried and a Surgeon. Now that we know that he qualified in Medicine, I took a look in the UK & Ireland Medical Directories on Ancestry for any entries for Arthur between 1871 and 1881. The first entry I found was in the 1875 directory [23], which states:

 *TURLE, Arthur, The Mount, Taunton--M.R.C.S. Eng. 1874; L.S.A. 1873

M.R.C.S. is a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons and L.S.A. is a Licentiate of the Apothecaries' Society.

He is listed again in the 1880 [24], 1885 [25] and 1890 [26] UK & Ireland Medical Directory , this time in Enderby, Leicester.

Arthur is listed on the 1891 England Census [27] still living in Enderby in Leicestershire at Cliffe House, Moores Lane along with his wife Louisa, 2 daughters, Mary and Dorothy and 3 servants, Alice Moore, Rebecca Harrison and Ada Moore. There are also 2 visitors listed, Clara Wallin and Marjorie Wallin. So, I now need to look back to see if I can find a record of a marriage between Arthur and Louisa. I search on the  FreeBMD website for an entry but do not find one, so I changed the search to look for just Arthur Turle and find an entry in the September quarter of 1882 in Blaby, Leicestershire between Arthur Turle and Sophia Louisa Everard [28]

Arthur Turle and Sophia Louisa Everard got married on 4 July 1882 at All Saints Church in Narborough, Leicestershire, England. It appears that relatives of them both witnessed the union.

To corroborate this information, I searched the General Register Office (GRO) website for births and found the following:

Although I found three children, only Mary and Dorothy are listed on the Census. A search of the death index on General Register Office (GRO) website finds an entry for the death of Muriel Clara Turle, aged 3 years, in Blaby, Leicestershire in 1888 [32].

I next find Arthur and Sophia Louisa Turle listed on the 1901 England Census [33]. They are living on New Street in Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire, with a patient, Marjorie Bertha Champion, Mary Elizabeth Morgan, a hospital nurse, and two servants, Linda Rawlings and Winston Tweed Linder Ham. Their daughters Mary and Dorothy are listed as living at 14 & 15 South Marine Terrace, Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire in Wales [34] as boarders and pupils with Mary Emerson Marles Thomas, a School English Mistress, Louise Danser, a Foreign School Mistress, Florence Emily Burgess, a Music Mistress, and Lilian Dalley, another English Mistress, along with 18 other pupils and 4 servants.

I took another look in the UK & Ireland Medical Directories on Ancestry for any further entries for Arthur and in the 1895 [35], 1900 [36] and 1905 [37] editions, he is listed as living in Chipping Norton, Oxon (Oxfordshire).

The next record I search for is the 1911 Census and find Arthur living with his wife Sophia Louisa and two daughters, Mary Louisa and Dorothy Everard at Avon, Burlington Road, Swanage, Dorset, England, along with 2 servants, Ellen Maria Watts, a Housemaid, and Rose Ellen Song, a Cook [38]. He is working as a Surgeon. He is listed in UK & Ireland Medical Directories on Ancestry in 1910 living at Risdon, Cliff Avenue, Swanage, Dorset [39]. The entries for 1915 [40] and 1920 [41] do not list an address and state that he is 'travelling'. The listings for 1925 [42] and 1930 [43] give his address as White House, Sandgate, Kent and that he is retired.

Arthur passed away on 1 February 1933 [44]. His entry in the Probate Calendar [45] states:

TURLE Arthur of The White House Sandgate Kent died 1 February 1933 Administration London 31 March to Mary Louisa Maxse (wife of Ernest George Berkeley Maxse). Effects £605.

It is interesting to see that Arthur left his effects to his daughter, Mary Louisa, who married Ernest George Berkeley Maxse, a Consul General of the Hague, Holland, at Christ Church in Paddington, London, England on 7 May 1914 [46], particularly as his wife Sophia Louisa Turle did not pass away until 24 August 1943 [47]. She also left her effects to her daughter, who is listed in her mother's probate entry [48] as a widow.

Following my research of Henry and Arthur, I have updated the family tree.

As expected, I will be writing a part three regarding the 3 youngest children of Henry and Jane Turle, sons Edward and Walter and daughter Jane.

In the meantime, I hope that you have enjoyed reading this blog much as I have enjoyed researching the Turle family for my One Place Study.

It would be wonderful to hear from you via the comments section on this blog or via my Facebook pageIf you would like to see the tree that I have been building for my One Place Study for each individual house, it is on Ancestry under 1 The Crescent Taunton One Place Study.
