The Turle Children ~ Edward Turle

Welcome to this update of The Crescent, Taunton, Somerset, One Place Study. I will be continuing to look at the children of Henry and Jane Turle (nee Hobbs) in this update. As you may recall, they had 8 children. This post will focus on Edward Turle.

Edward was born in 1854 [1] and baptised at St Mary Magdalene Church in Taunton, Somerset, England on 21 July 1854 [2]. On the 1861 England Census, Edward is living at Risdon House on The Crescent with his family [3] (see post) and on the 1871 England Census, he was living with them at 1 The Crescent [4] (see post).

By the time of the 1881 England Census, Edward has moved to Lewisham in London, England, where he living as a boarder at Perceval House, Dartmouth Row, which was part of the Lewisham Grammar School [5]. He is listed as a Tutor.

On 11 April 1882, Edward married Jessie Elizabeth Kieser at St Mary's Church, Lewisham, Kent, England [6] [7].

I also found two marriage notices in local Somerset newspapers regarding their union [8] [9]

The first notice in the Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette on 20 April 1882 has the bride's surname spelt Kieser, the same as the marriage document. The second notice in the Taunton Courier and Western Advertiser on 19 April 1882 has her surname spelt as Kilser.

By the time of the 1891 England Census, Edward and his wife Jessie are living at Wimbledon College in Surrey, England, along with 2 sons, Charles and Henry, Edward's sister, Clara, Jessie's Father, William Kieser, a cousin whose name is given as Susan E Morle, along with 50 other people, who are mix of school staff, scholar boarders and servants [10].

So following their marriage, Edward and Jessie had at least two children. I next did a search on the General Register Office (GRO) website birth index for entries relating to Charles and Henry Turle and any other children that might be offspring of Edward and Jessie. I found the following information:

According to a newspaper notice in the Hastings and St Leonards Observer on 31 March 1883, Charles Edward was born on 23 March 1883 [13].

He was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Blackheath Hill, Greenwich, Kent, England on 16 May 1883 [14].

Henry Bernard's birth notice was in the St James's Gazette, London, England, on 19 September 1885, detailing that he was born on 18 September 1885 [15].

He was also baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Blackheath Hill, Greenwich, Kent, England, on 1 November 1885 [16].

On the 1901 England Census, Edward is living at Hindhead School in Frensham, Surrey, England with his wife, Jessie, son, who's name is given as Bernard but is actually Henry, daughter, Janie and his wife's Father, William Kieser [17]. His sister, Clara, is listed as a visitor. He is a schoolmaster. There are 29 other people listed at this address, which is a mixture of school staff, scholar boarders and servants.

I then did a search on the General Register Office (GRO) website birth index for Janie Turle along with any other possible siblings. I only found one record and that was Janie's:

Janie Brenda was baptised at St John the Evangelist with Rushmoor in Churt, Surrey, England, on 11 September 1894 [19].

On the 1911 England Census, Edward and his wife Jessie are living at Twizzletwig in Hinehead, Surrey, England [20].

Edward passed away on 9 October 1930 in Hindhead, Surrey, England [21]. There was an article in the West Sussex Gazette on 16 October concerning his passing [22]

Jessie was buried at St Alban in Hinehead, Surrey, England on 12 November 1937 [26]. There is the following entry in the Probate Service website for Jessie Elizabeth Turle [27]

All 3 of Edward and Jessie Elizabeth's children, Charles Edward Turle, Henry Bernard Turle and Janie Brenda Turle, got married and had their own children. However, that is taking me further away from The Crescent in Taunton, Somerset, England. Next time I will continue with my updates for the Turle family, with the 2 final children who were living at 1 The Crescent at the time of the 1871 England Census, Clara Jane, their only daughter, and Walter, their youngest son who was named in memory of their elder son Walter Turle (1852-1856). In the meantime, I hope that you have enjoyed reading this blog much as I have enjoyed researching this family for my One Place Study.
