Who was living at 1 The Crescent on the 1871 Census?

This post will look at the family who was living at 1 The Crescent, Taunton, Somerset, at the time of the 1871 England Census.

At this time, Henry Turle, a retired merchant, was living there with his wife, Jane, 2 sons, Walter and Edward, and daughter Clara J [1]. Also living at the residence was Anne Thorpe, sister of Jane and a farmer's widow, her 2 sons, James C and Robert H, and 2 daughters, Elizabeth M and Rosa Cole. The household had 2 servants, Amelia Panting, a cook, and Ellen Lawrence, a housemaid.

I will focus on the Turle family in this update. My first task is to identify the Turle children, using the information from the census on their place of birth and their age to get an approximate year of birth. I conducted a search of the General Register Office website and returned the following results:

So we have established that Henry Turle wife's name was Jane Hobbs. I next did I search of the Ancestry website and found a marriage entry [5] [6] on 27 August 1844 between Henry Turle of Taunton and Jane Hobbs of Cannington, which would fit with all the information that we have collated as far.

I then began researching, using the Ancestry website, for the baptisms of the children of Henry and Jane Turle named on the 1871 England Census. The table below shows the details of the children's baptisms at St Mary Magdalene Church:

So, here is the Turle Family Tree from the information that we discovered from this week's research:

I am looking forward to researching the Turle family as part of my One Place Study of The Crescent, Taunton. On the next update, I will look further backwards into the history of this family. In the meantime, I hope that you have enjoyed reading this blog much as I have enjoyed researching this family for my One Place Study.

It would be wonderful to hear from you via the comments section on this blog or via my Facebook pageIf you would like to see the tree that I have been building for my One Place Study for each individual house, it is on Ancestry under 1 The Crescent Taunton One Place Study. This study is also part of the Society of One Place Studies
