Following the Turle's after the 1871 England Census...

This update will consider what happened to Henry and Jane Turle following their entry on the 1871 England Census at 1 The Crescent in Taunton, Somerset, England (see post).

We have the family tree outline for Henry and Jane Turle (nee Hobbs) and their 7 sons and 1 daughter from the information that we have collated so far.

I next searched for Henry and Jane on the 1881 England Census on Ancestry and found that they were still living in Taunton, Somerset, England [1]:

They are living at 23 Mount Street, Taunton, with their servant, Ann Pullman. Henry is a retired merchant and grocer. So what has happened to their 5 surviving sons and daughter? I will look at them in a future update.

I then moved onto looking for them in the 1891 England Census on Ancestry. However, I was unable to find an entry that was a match for them. So I turned to the General Register Office (GRO) website to see if I could find entries for their deaths. I found only one possible match for each of them:

Neither of these were recorded in Somerset, England. Instead, they were both registered in Surrey, England. To corroborate that these entries were the correct ones for the Henry and Jane Turle who I am researching, I searched the Probate Service website. I found an entry for Jane's probate in the year 1885 as follows [4]:

TURLE Jane.        Personal Estate £52

25 August. The Will with a Codicil of Jane Turle (Wife of Henry Turle) formerly of Taunton in the County of Somerset but late of the Vivary Addiscombe - grove Croydon in the County of Surrey who died 9 June 1884 at the Vivary was proved at the Principal Registry by the said Henry Turle of the Vivary Gentleman the sole Executor, Probate being granted under certain Limitations.

So, it looks like the death entry on the GRO website is the correct one for Jane. Turning to Henry Turle, I found an entry on the Probate Service website in the year 1889 [5]:

TURLE Henry.        Personal Estate £1,078 6s. 8d

16 October. The Will of Henry Turle late of Taunton in the County of Somerset Gentleman who died 8 July 1889 at Wimbledon School Wimbledon in the County of Surrey was proved at the Principal Registry by Edward Turle of Wimbledon School Schoolmaster the Son one of the Executors.

So again, this probate entry corroborates the death index for Henry Turle in 1889 on the GRO website. It also lists one of his sons, Edward, as being a Schoolmaster at Wimbledon School, so giving as a lead to researching him later on.

Jane was buried on 14 June 1884 in Lewisham, London, England [6]. Henry was buried on 12 July 1889, also in Lewisham, London, England [7]

Below is an updated family tree for Henry and Jane Turle (nee Hobbs).

On the next update, I will look into the children of Henry and Jane Turle beyond the 1871 England Census when they were living at 1 The Crescent as part of my One Place Study of The Crescent, Taunton. In the meantime, I hope that you have enjoyed reading this blog much as I have enjoyed researching this family for my One Place Study.

It would be wonderful to hear from you via the comments section on this blog or via my Facebook pageIf you would like to see the tree that I have been building for my One Place Study for each individual house, it is on Ancestry under 1 The Crescent Taunton One Place Study. This study is also part of the Society of One Place Studies
